Oscilloscope Universal Troubleshooting Guide
Step 1 — Check Probe First

Most oscilloscope problems are actually:

broken probes
incorrect attenuation
grounding mistakes

Always verify:

probe set to 10X
oscilloscope set to 10X
probe compensation adjusted
Step 2 — Use Internal Calibration Signal

Most oscilloscopes include:

1 kHz square wave output

Use this to verify:

trigger
waveform display
probe compensation
channel integrity
Step 3 — Run Self Calibration

Many Rigol and Siglent models include:

SELF CAL
SELF TEST

Procedure:

Warm scope 20 minutes
Disconnect probes
Run self calibration

Rigol documentation recommends periodic self calibration for measurement accuracy.

Step 4 — Check Cooling System

Overheating can cause:

waveform instability
random shutdowns
ADC errors
FPGA faults

Inspect:

fan speed
vents
internal dust
Step 5 — Firmware Recovery

Many modern oscilloscopes use Linux-based systems internally.

Symptoms of firmware corruption:

boot loop
frozen logo
missing menus
USB failures

Common recovery:

USB firmware flashing
factory reset
service mode recovery
