Choosing between LiDAR vs Vision for SLAM robots?

I'm building a prototype indoor robot. Stuck between using 2D LiDAR (Hokuyo) vs depth camera (Intel RealSense).
What’s more reliable long-term?

2D LiDAR still king for stable indoor mapping. Vision is good but requires strong lighting conditions.

Depth cameras struggle on shiny floors or glass walls. LiDAR doesn’t care about that.

For research projects, use both. For commercial product, LiDAR is less headache.
