Want to set up home automation but don't want any cloud services involved for privacy reasons. Is this realistic in 2024? What's the best platform that works completely locally? I've heard home assistant can do this but want to make sure before i invest time in setting it up.

Home Assistant is exactly what you want. Works 100% locally if you set it up that way. Just avoid cloud-integrated devices or make sure they have local api's. Zigbee and zwave devices work great without internet. I've been running HA offline for 2 years now and it's been rock solid. You can even use it without the cloud backup features if you want.
